Back to square one

Just when we were about to celebrate and announce that she is diaper-free...

She 'leaked out' last night....

Maybe it was too cold last night...maybe she drank too much before sleep last nite...

Watever it is, it's back to square one again...

Sigh....

Sleeping Well

Yy has not been sleeping well these few days. In fact, since she was a baby, she has been a bad sleeper. She is recovering from her cough very slowly. How to get well if she dun rest well?...sigh...

Just this morning, she woke up crying at 4am and decided to fall asleep at 6am, only to be waken up by us at 6.30am to get ready for school.

I researched a bit online and found this interesting article...

Facts about baby/child and sleep

Babies are awful sleepers. Period. Accept this and you will stop seeing a wakeful baby as some kind of parental failure.

The following have been established in research:

Babies are prone to wake far more than adults – average cycle for them is about 50 minutes versus 90 minutes for adults.

Persistent or recurring infant sleep problems in the preschool years are very common

Approximately 25% of children under 5 have some type of sleep problem.

Up to 20% of parents report a problem with infant crying or irritability in the first 3 months of life.

Your task:Calming the brain at bedtime

Primary goal: Bring your child down from super alert state by activating the calming brain chemicals, oxytocin and melatonin (sleep hormone).

Most likely way of achieving this is by establishing a soothing routine.

Whatever you do stay calm. If you are uptight, you can't expect yourself to calm your child. Your tone is everything. Your stress and anger can activate the alarm systems in your child's brain, making her feel unsafe to go to sleep.

Snuggle up and read a story. Your body contact with your child will activate oxytocin in her brain, which can make her feel sleepy.

Try and set up the atmosphere – dim light, soothing music.

Avoid giving food that will keep the child awake such as protein food like meat or fish and chocolate (stimulant) 2 hours before bedtime. Offer carbohydrate food like banana as it activates serotonin which can help make her feel sleepy.

Avoid activating the FEAR system in the lower brain. Keep a nightlight, comfort and assure him, or pray together.

You may choose to lie down next to your child while he goes to sleep. No talking when you do it. Pretend to be asleep yourself. The skin-to-skin contact will regulate your child's bodily arousal system and strengthen the bond you share.

Allow your child to tell you what her fears are concerning sleeping.

Co-sleeping

Extensive research shows that safe co-sleeping can be a real investment for your child's future physical and emotional health.

It provides a baby with a sensory rich environment because of the touch, movement, smells and sounds.

Skin-to-skin contact throughout the night helps to regulate a baby's immature brain systems.

Thermal synchrony happens where the mother's body temperature regulates baby's temperature. For instance, if baby is too cold, the mother's temperature will rise 2 degrees to warm her. Conversely if the baby is too warm, the mother's temperature will lower by 1 degree to cool her. Pretty amazing huh?

Co-sleeping means hours of extra body contact. The more touch a child gets in childhood, the calmer and less fearful he is likely to be in adulthood. The physical contact helps to regulate the stress response system in the brain.

Some studies show that children who have never slept in their parents' bed are harder to control.

Risks of co-sleeping.

Research indicates that the fears about suffocating the baby is unfounded. In fact co-sleeping seems to bring a higher degree of maternal vigilance.

If you intend to co-sleep, it is important that you become aware of SIDS and what you can do to minimize the risks.

Research around the world shows very low rates of SIDS in countries where co-sleeping is common, for example in Asia. One study showed that only 4% of Asian babies sleep alone.

SIDS is caused mostly by unstable breathing and an immature cardiovascular system. Being in close bodily contact with the mother stabilizes a baby's heartbeat and breathing.

When do you stop co-sleeping? It's up to your discretion.

Studies show that the majority of preschoolers need an adult next to them until they fall asleep, and most come to the parents' bed regularly for comfort. Such is the power of the lower brain's fear and separation distress systems.

All about Sleep training

Sleep training is often done because parents and their child are in need of sleep. It is vital for physical growth of the baby as the growth hormone is only released during sleep.

When you decide to sleep train, make sure you don't use a method that involves prolonged crying, even for a few nights.

Eventually children will grow out of separation distress and until them it is crucial that you meet their distressed states with reassurance and comfort.

Why the “cry it out” technique is not good? It may achieved the goal of the baby sleeping but it is at a high cost.

Because she went to sleep stressed from the desperate crying, she may wake up frequently in the middle of the might.

Baby sleeps eventually more because of the exhaustion, which also means that she sleeps with elevated stress levels. Studies show that after being left to cry, babies move into a primitive defense mode and this results in an irregularity in breathing and heart rate and a high level of cortisol.

Kind sleep training – the safe and no-cry options

If your child follows you out of the room, reassure him that he is safe and that you will see him in the morning. Don't ignore and leave him to cry. Repeat the assurance as often as needed.

Avoid sleep training that is based on a deal to leave the door open. This activates fear of the door being shut. Repeated activation of this system in childhood leads to anxiety disorders in later life.
Use science to inform your methods when it's time for your child to sleep on his own.

When it time, it's been shown that acoustic presence of the mother can effectively bring down the stress chemical levels. Give your child a tape recording of your voice, or favourite story.

Your smell can also trigger powerful positive feelings. Give her something to hold in the night that smells of you. With baby, place near her a soft piece of cloth with the smell of our breast milk can be highly effective in settling her.

Make your child's bedroom a special sanctuary where she loves to be.

Encourage your child to have a cuddly toy which also activates comforting brain chemicals.

Two's a company, Three's a crowd

Sun, Sand and Sea

We brought yy to the East Coast Park last friday after work.

A set of sand play toys = $5.90

Beachmat = $0 (from home)

Good place for parents to laze around while the kids exhaust themselves while playing on the beach.

One of the little pleasures in life ;)

Father and daughter sharing a tender moment

YY and Me

YY and Mr FAT

Look at the pathetic two mounds on the right which mr FAT 'built' and tried to convince yy that they are castles

We are going to the zoo, zoo, zoo

Ok, this post is way overdue...

Anyway better late than never :)

We went to the zoo with yy's cousins on 12 Jun 09, Fri. Right after yw's vaccination, we sent our car for servicing before hopping on Lay Yong's car (mr FAT's sis) to the zoo.

It's not easy to handle 3 active toddlers..even not easy to bring them to the zoo..bringing the wildlife to the wildlife?

LY has a zoo membership card, and we all got in for free, how did we do that? Through some scrupulous way which I can't blog here...

We were kind of glad that we had the card coz it meant free unlimited tram rides...which was very very important for 3 not-very-sporty adults and 3 hyperactive toddlers...

So there was it, we spent our entire day at the zoo on tram rides...can't possibly walk under the scorching sun to the animal enclosures!...

We saw the animal shows and the fun started for the kids when they arrived at the rainforest playground.

Here are the fotos....

ok, yy's swimming costume is fugly and too small for her...it is one of those hand-me-downs from my cousin's kids. Hint hint to any kind sponsors for new swimwear for yy... :)

Exhausted YY

For the past two days, yy slept at about 10ish after milk, woke up at 2.30am for milk, back to sleep at 5am and got dragged out of bed by me at 6.30am to get ready for school.

When we go and fetch her, her eyes were teary but it was not because she was crying. She looked very tired.

Her teacher says she looked like she is going to fall sick anytime. :( I checked with the teacher about her lunch, if she had enough for lunch, teacher says that in fact she ate a lot!

then why she is soo hungry for milk feeds at nite??

Could it be that she is over-exhausted during last weekend when we had activities back-to-back (kiteflying, april'swedding, WQ's gal full mth)?

Poor baby....we decided to let her rest and not go to school this coming fri...

Going to plan an outing with her cousins to the zoo or east coast park :)

Say Ribena 10 times!

It was a hot and humid evening when we finally settled down at my mum's place to have our dinner.

My mum has finished feeding Yy and she started to demand for Ribena.

"Ribena!" she roared.

"No more, dun have liao, finished liao" my mum explained and passed her waterbottle.

"Yanyan, just say ribena 10 times and it will appear in front of you." I teased her.

She kept quiet.

"Come on, yanyan, say ribena. Say ribena ten times and ribena will appear!" I cajoled.

She kept quiet but looked at me with intent.

"Come on baby, say ribena. Say ten times and ribena will appear!" At this moment, she shouted,

"Ten times!"

-_-

Everyone roared in laughter, coz my 20mth toddler managed to 'tease' her mummy back.

YY Milestones - 20 mth

It's YY's 1st week of her 20 mths old phase. Tot it would be good to track her milestones on blog record...

20 months
• Feeds doll - chk! She not only feed her soft toy monkey, she made him wear her diaper!
• Takes off own clothes - half chk! She only know how to wear her shorts, she has not displayed any signs of stripping yet...
• Dumps an object in imitation, such as throwing garbage away - chk! She loves to throw things in the bin!
• Learns words at a rate of ten or more a day - chk! She is spongebob!
• Can walk up stairs (but probably not down) - half-chk! With assistance but it's been a while I checked her.
• May start exploring genitals - chk! she will explore hers when it itches..
• Draws a straight line - chk! crookedly straight line she draws
• Names several body parts - double, triple chk! She can name all her body parts all the way down to her toes since she was 1 yr old!

Additional stuff she learnt in her entire 19th month:
- Associate two persons together : if papa comes and pick her alone, she will ask, 'Mummy leh?' If she sees my bro-in-law alone, she will ask, 'Ah mm, leh?'
- Converse using hp : now she knows that the sound from the hp is actually voices and she can talk to it.
- Wear and take off shoes on her own: She wears and takes off her shoes like how the adults do, standing
while doing it!
- Showing emotions (ε–œζ€’ε“€δΉ): not very dramatic, but au naturel performance from this kiddo!

Things kids do

Last nite, my lil' fishball (yy) stuffed my work bag into the gap between my fridge and the wall.

God knows what had clinged onto my bag as I dun recall cleaning that gap at all since I moved in. Wait a min...I dun even rem noticing the gap!

Then I caught her trying to disassemble the ant killer and a while later putting a little toy piece in her mouth.

It's been a while....

Hiyo!

It's been a really long time...

I suppose no one come into this blog and check if I m doing any updates now...

Been really really buzy.

Updates

Our new flat has arrived and is currently undergoing renovation.

I m preggie again...this time round I m expecting a pair of identical twins!!! They are gals, so by next year Mar, I would have 3 daughters :D

This time round, the pregnancy is much tougher and I need to put on more weight to make sure that the babies are carried to full term. Twins are normally premature....

We just bought a new car and need to get a maid by Jan next year...money, money....

Yuyan

Yuyan is growing very fast...her lingusitic ability sometimes astonishes us...

She learn and form words and actions almost instantly by observing your mouth and facial expressions. She's a very good imitator.

Words she can pronounce quite accurately: Ah Ma, Mama, Papa, apple, banana-na-na, Ah Pek, Yi-Er, Pear, Hello, Yellow, No-no-no (with fingers waving), Ah Gu, Ah Yi, Mei mei, Cher Cher, Ya ya, ball, ah Pen, bear bear, baby

Actions she can perform given verbal cues: point to nose, belly, face, eyes, ears, feet and mouth (she can even point to these body parts of a soft toy), kisses with muack sounds, pan kisses, clap hands (she loves to get people clapping for her), twinkle twinkle little star (hands open and close), hug soft toys, pat you on your shoulder, sayang mei mei (aka my stomach)

Toys she play: keyboard piano (play with her index fingers and feet), telephone (place receiver at ear and say helo, helo, helo!), put balls into containers, put anything that resemble a hat on her head, tear stickers and put them back, ply off magnets and place them back...

Food she now eats: she eats rice, porridge, pancakes, vego, fish, potato, carrots, spinach, bread, biscuits, pork, eggs, papaya, apple, banana now...she has about 8 teeth (4 on top and 4 at the bottom now)...she now drink little milk...

She has mastered the art of crawling all over, high and low and knows how to get down from a higher place safely. She understand when and wat not to touch when you glare at her and warn her...She will try her luck and move her hands towards the thing while peering if you are watching...She loves to play with ice, empty cold bottles...she loves flipping things over and throwing puzzle pieces all over...

She loves to imitate you brushing your teeth by sticking one finger into her mouth. She loves to drink her medicine and even imitate coughing to have you feed her the syrup with the syringe. She laughs when you nei nei nei bo bo her...she is the most happy when you bring her out of the house...she is the most dazed when you put her in a carseat as she could not do anything except to stare out of the car window...

She is now taking her few unassisted steps...

and she is only 12 months and 3 weeks!!!

I sound like those proud mothers but I can't help but marvel at how fast and well she grows :D

Some random photos of yuyan, the soon-to-be big sister...

I love this photo of her...looks like me when I was her age...will go and search for my photo and post it up!

Both yy and me celebrated our birthdays at the NTUC Downtown East Chalet on 20 Sept 2008. She celebrated her first bdae while I celebrated my 29th bdae...obviously, mr fat has been maintaining if not, increasing his weight...

She loves to flank off mr fat's spectacles whenever he carry her...

A gift from her ah-gu (the smelly uncle) - she loves to take the driver's seat and pretend that she is one of the F1 drivers, complete with boom boom, po po sounds...

She sways with ABC music videos on youtube, claps and nods her head as if catching the rhythm when her uncle and auntie play their guitars...

The Evolution of Parenthood

Got this off one mother's blog...

Your Clothes

1st baby: You begin wearing maternity clothes as soon as your OB/GYN confirms your pregnancy.

2nd baby: You wear your regular clothes for as long as possible.

3rd baby: Your maternity clothes are your regular clothes.

The Baby’s Name

1st baby: You pore over baby-name books and practice pronouncing and writing combinations of all your favourites.

2nd baby: Someone has to name their kid after your great-aunt Mavis, right? It might as well be you.

3rd baby: You open a name book, close your eyes, and see where your finger falls. Bimaldo? Perfect!

Preparing for the Birth

1st baby: You practice your breathing religiously.

2nd baby: You don’t bother practicing because you remember that last time, breathing didn’t do a thing.

3rd baby: You ask for an epidural in your 8th month.

The Layette

1st baby: You pre-wash your newborn’s clothes, color-coordinate them, and fold them neatly in the baby’s little bureau.

2nd baby: You check to make sure that the clothes are clean and discard only the ones with the darkest stains.

3rd baby: Boys can wear pink, can’t they?

Pacifier

1st baby: If the pacifier falls on the floor, you put it away until you can go home and wash and boil it.

2nd baby: When the pacifier falls on the floor, you squirt it off with some juice from the baby’s bottle.

3rd baby: You wipe it off on your shirt and pop it back in.

Diapering

1st baby: You change your baby’s diapers every hour, whether they need it or not.

2nd baby: You change their diaper every 2 to 3 hours, if needed.

3rd baby: You try to change their diaper before others start to complain about the smell or you see it sagging to their knees.

Worries

1st baby: At the first sign of distress - a whimper, a frown - you pick up the baby.

2nd baby: You pick the baby up when her wails threaten to wake your firstborn.

3rd baby: You teach your 3-year-old how to rewind the mechanical swing.

Activities

1st baby: You take your infant to Baby Gymnastics, Baby Swing, and Baby Story Hour.

2nd baby: You take your infant to Baby Gymnastics.

3rd baby: You take your infant to the supermarket and the dry cleaner.

Going Out

1st baby: The first time you leave your baby with a sitter, you call home 5 times.

2nd baby: Just before you walk out the door, you remember to leave a number where you can be reached.

3rd baby: You leave instructions for the sitter to call only if she sees blood.

At Home

1st baby: You spend a good bit of every day just gazing at the baby.

2nd baby: You spend a bit of every day watching to be sure your older child isn’t squeezing, poking, or hitting the baby.

3rd baby: You spend a little bit of every day hiding from the children.

Potty training

Never too young to learn...

Rasterbator

The Rasterbator creates huge, rasterized images from any picture. Upload an image, print the resulting multi-page pdf file and assemble the pages into extremely cool looking poster up to 20 meters in size.

Pretty cool when you put the 'dotted' papers together...a cheap and nice wall poster....

It looks better with more papers and gaps in between to create the 'window' effect...here's a cool example from the website...
