Back to square one

Just when we were about to celebrate and announce that she is diaper-free...

She 'leaked out' last night....

Maybe it was too cold last night...maybe she drank too much before sleep last nite...

Watever it is, it's back to square one again...

Sigh....

Crossing my fingers..

I think this is it....

2nd nite in which yan slept without her diaper...

No accident...

crossing my fingers :X

'Skills' I ve acquired after becoming a mum...

Falling asleep quickly

Bathing infants and kids

Eating in the fastest possible time

Not gagging when I clean poo

Not getting angry when kids do the darnest things.....

(such as messing up the toys when u just finished packing them, spilling the drinks when u just mopped the floor, wake up wide-eyed when you are about to fall asleep... 忍。。。。)

My Twin Stars

I need to start updating my blog...why is it so hard? tsk tsk... :(

Anyway, the below note was posted in my facebook, I thought it would be good that I put it up here too for the records...

Dear Xuan Xuan and Wei Wei

You two are going to be one year old soon...How time files. Mummy can't find any better words to describe the pure joy to see how you two grow day by day from scrawny little babies to active toddlers.

Mummy and Daddy remember the surprise and excitement when Doc says she saw two blinking heartbeats during the scan. And how both mummy's and daddy's families were excited about having you two too. To us, you two are like gifts that we might have daydreamed of but never thought that we would have in our hands. You two are that precious and special to us.

I also remember the tough and worrying times when I was pregnant with you gals. I had to go through a lot of scans and tests to make sure that both of you are growing well in me. Especially Wei wei, you are always growing at a slower rate than Xuan xuan.

I remember how both of you moved inside me and I am always trying to figure out which of you moved and how are you two positioned in my tummy.

I remember my very 1st (and only, I hope) surgery experience to bring you two out of my tummy. I was so frightened and shaken during the whole surgery. I remembered shivering and crying uncontrollably after I saw you two gals for the 1st time.

It was an unforgettable life experience for me.

Despite the goo and blood, you two were lovely. And Wei wei, you were very tiny then and looked like an angmoh baby (somehow premature tiny babies looked angmoh-ish, I wonder why). I was really relieved that you two turned out healthy and even scored high marks in the Apgar test. I was relieved that both of you need not be placed in the neonatal unit and were able to take to milk bottles pretty fast.

It's a pity I could not breastfeed you gals but I won't feel bad coz I tried my best and I know I have given you the best I could.

Xuan xuan,

You have been a 'easy' baby. You sleep well, drink well and grow well. And you have grown so pretty with your big, sparkling, doey eyes and you have no idea how proud Mummy is whenever I get compliments about your pretty looks.'Look, this baby is very pretty" "Her eyes are so pretty and big" "She will grow up to be a very pretty gal" "She got a sweet smile and pretty eyes" "Her hair is so lush and dark" "She looks like those poster babies" "She can be on commercials"

Your eyes sparkles with joy whenever you see me and glisten with tears whenever I leave you with granny. You are very cuddly and hugable just like your daddy. Whenever people ask whom do you resemble more, I would feel really proud to tell them that you look like me :) No doubt, like your mummy (haha!) you will grow up to memerising boys with your big, sparkling eyes and your lush, black hair.

You love to babble, mostly in baby language and love to start verbal war with Wei wei by ranting 'AHHHHHH' as long as you can. I think you would start talking first. And you are getting closer to say the word, 'Banana'.

You are the pretty one in the family and I am sure you would be the centre of attention wherever you go.

Wei wei,

You are the youngest and the smallest in the family (sometimes you catch up with Xuan on size if she fall sick)). You were only 1.9kg when you were born. I remember how hard it was to feed you as you regurgitate milk everytime after we fed you. And how milk seems to 'leak' from both sides of your mouth. You don't like sleeping too. You sleep very little for a baby.

But man, you are a real fighter and a fast learner. You are catching up with your bigger sis, Xuan xuan in size. You learnt to lift your head, sit up, crawl, hold and stand first. Now you could hold and walk and I believe you will be walking and running before Xuan xuan. You still do not sleep long as you spend most of your time exploring and exercising.

You are an adventurer. Go ahead and dream big, gal. You are destined for big things. (like what your daddy love to say, "I like big things")

You are a pretty girl too, your eyes are big and there is a cheeky glint in them. Your hair is brown and fine unlike Xuan xuan. I feel the most appreciated whenever I am with you coz I can sense that you are always looking around for me even when you are in the midst of playing your toys. I love it when you would always lunge towards me for hugs and kisses.

My two little twin stars,

I am really happy that I m ranked number '1' in the eyes of both of you. Everyone, including granny and ah-ma or even daddy cannot replace my position in your hearts. When I m around, you two refuse to settle for the second-best and only want me to carry and I ve to 'struggle' to carry two of you at the same time.

Although we have no choice but to separate you two at both grannies' homes over the weekdays, mummy and daddy believe that this arrangement was the best for both of you and we are very sure that you two would be well-loved and well-taken care of by both grannies. Every weekend, I look forward to seeing how you two giggle and smile when you two reunite.

I simply love the moments when you two wake up together with us in the mornings. You gals smile and giggle like it was the happiest time of the entire day.Mummy has not been taking much photos of you two pretty princesses and I resolve to take more photos of you two this new year.

Looking forward to your 1st birthday, gals :D

Lots of love,Mummy

Fats aplenty

Fats, flabby arms and tummy.

I see them now aplenty.

I run and hide whenever there is any thing reflective.

But alas,

Inside the lift I could not hide

Mirrors, mirrors all over the walls

In my desperate attempt to hide from the mirrored walls

I kept my eyes glued on the LCD screen.

It was not easy, I almost let out a scream.

They were there all the time,

but consciously, I avoided them.

After two pregnancies and lots of late dinners,

they decided to make their presence felt.

Now I know they are here to stay.

How to chase them away?

Sleeping Well

Yy has not been sleeping well these few days. In fact, since she was a baby, she has been a bad sleeper. She is recovering from her cough very slowly. How to get well if she dun rest well?...sigh...

Just this morning, she woke up crying at 4am and decided to fall asleep at 6am, only to be waken up by us at 6.30am to get ready for school.

I researched a bit online and found this interesting article...

Facts about baby/child and sleep

Babies are awful sleepers. Period. Accept this and you will stop seeing a wakeful baby as some kind of parental failure.

The following have been established in research:

Babies are prone to wake far more than adults – average cycle for them is about 50 minutes versus 90 minutes for adults.

Persistent or recurring infant sleep problems in the preschool years are very common

Approximately 25% of children under 5 have some type of sleep problem.

Up to 20% of parents report a problem with infant crying or irritability in the first 3 months of life.

Your task:Calming the brain at bedtime

Primary goal: Bring your child down from super alert state by activating the calming brain chemicals, oxytocin and melatonin (sleep hormone).

Most likely way of achieving this is by establishing a soothing routine.

Whatever you do stay calm. If you are uptight, you can't expect yourself to calm your child. Your tone is everything. Your stress and anger can activate the alarm systems in your child's brain, making her feel unsafe to go to sleep.

Snuggle up and read a story. Your body contact with your child will activate oxytocin in her brain, which can make her feel sleepy.

Try and set up the atmosphere – dim light, soothing music.

Avoid giving food that will keep the child awake such as protein food like meat or fish and chocolate (stimulant) 2 hours before bedtime. Offer carbohydrate food like banana as it activates serotonin which can help make her feel sleepy.

Avoid activating the FEAR system in the lower brain. Keep a nightlight, comfort and assure him, or pray together.

You may choose to lie down next to your child while he goes to sleep. No talking when you do it. Pretend to be asleep yourself. The skin-to-skin contact will regulate your child's bodily arousal system and strengthen the bond you share.

Allow your child to tell you what her fears are concerning sleeping.

Co-sleeping

Extensive research shows that safe co-sleeping can be a real investment for your child's future physical and emotional health.

It provides a baby with a sensory rich environment because of the touch, movement, smells and sounds.

Skin-to-skin contact throughout the night helps to regulate a baby's immature brain systems.

Thermal synchrony happens where the mother's body temperature regulates baby's temperature. For instance, if baby is too cold, the mother's temperature will rise 2 degrees to warm her. Conversely if the baby is too warm, the mother's temperature will lower by 1 degree to cool her. Pretty amazing huh?

Co-sleeping means hours of extra body contact. The more touch a child gets in childhood, the calmer and less fearful he is likely to be in adulthood. The physical contact helps to regulate the stress response system in the brain.

Some studies show that children who have never slept in their parents' bed are harder to control.

Risks of co-sleeping.

Research indicates that the fears about suffocating the baby is unfounded. In fact co-sleeping seems to bring a higher degree of maternal vigilance.

If you intend to co-sleep, it is important that you become aware of SIDS and what you can do to minimize the risks.

Research around the world shows very low rates of SIDS in countries where co-sleeping is common, for example in Asia. One study showed that only 4% of Asian babies sleep alone.

SIDS is caused mostly by unstable breathing and an immature cardiovascular system. Being in close bodily contact with the mother stabilizes a baby's heartbeat and breathing.

When do you stop co-sleeping? It's up to your discretion.

Studies show that the majority of preschoolers need an adult next to them until they fall asleep, and most come to the parents' bed regularly for comfort. Such is the power of the lower brain's fear and separation distress systems.

All about Sleep training

Sleep training is often done because parents and their child are in need of sleep. It is vital for physical growth of the baby as the growth hormone is only released during sleep.

When you decide to sleep train, make sure you don't use a method that involves prolonged crying, even for a few nights.

Eventually children will grow out of separation distress and until them it is crucial that you meet their distressed states with reassurance and comfort.

Why the “cry it out” technique is not good? It may achieved the goal of the baby sleeping but it is at a high cost.

Because she went to sleep stressed from the desperate crying, she may wake up frequently in the middle of the might.

Baby sleeps eventually more because of the exhaustion, which also means that she sleeps with elevated stress levels. Studies show that after being left to cry, babies move into a primitive defense mode and this results in an irregularity in breathing and heart rate and a high level of cortisol.

Kind sleep training – the safe and no-cry options

If your child follows you out of the room, reassure him that he is safe and that you will see him in the morning. Don't ignore and leave him to cry. Repeat the assurance as often as needed.

Avoid sleep training that is based on a deal to leave the door open. This activates fear of the door being shut. Repeated activation of this system in childhood leads to anxiety disorders in later life.
Use science to inform your methods when it's time for your child to sleep on his own.

When it time, it's been shown that acoustic presence of the mother can effectively bring down the stress chemical levels. Give your child a tape recording of your voice, or favourite story.

Your smell can also trigger powerful positive feelings. Give her something to hold in the night that smells of you. With baby, place near her a soft piece of cloth with the smell of our breast milk can be highly effective in settling her.

Make your child's bedroom a special sanctuary where she loves to be.

Encourage your child to have a cuddly toy which also activates comforting brain chemicals.
